Quilts

Through the years, quilts have become documents of history. They are the products of their society, influenced by the culture, and the environment of the people who made them. The history of America can be seen in the history of quilts. Stitched into these quilts is the rich heritage of thrifty self-sufficient women who helped homestead the land, the history of families sewn into quilts one patch or one stitch at a time, and the legacy of the art of quilting, passed on from generation to generation.

Skilled Black slave women on plantations and in other wealthy households did the spinning, weaving, sewing and quilting in addition to many household duties. Their surviving quilts provide a unique history of their lives and culture.

Many slaves did not have a chance to learn how to read and write. In some cases, they were not even allowed to talk to one another. They had to be clever, and find other ways to “talk” and tell their stories about everyday life.

There is a belief that quilts were used to communicate information to African American Slaves about how to escape to freedom via the Underground Railroad.

Quilts are trending as both decor and interesting bedding options.
